I’ve only written this entry because it was the wettest day of the summer so far last Sunday and I went running 🙁 (dedication – more like a record breaker for the wettest run ever and rain really upsets me so I try to avoid it – how things have changed!!). I went because of the weather in last year’s 10k which was pretty similar (fingers x for a dry 10k day this year). And I had a running buddy in the shape of my husband who has also entered the 10k for the first time. We don’t tend to run together much mainly because he is generally much fitter, taller and faster than me thus leaving me in a situation where I am less fit, slower and generally more rubbish! I did take the precautionary measure of a running jacket – supposedly waterproof, my trusty baseball cap and my older trainers. My magic, lovely trainers stayed at home.
Off we went in the torrential rain on a cycle path so it was less exposed than running by the sea or around the roads. I was soaked even through my running jacket and hat – yuk. Anyway, it was ok up until the turnaround point when we were running directly into the wind and therefore the rain. Some cyclists passed and shouted a few words of encouragement – “Well done for getting out in this weather” because it was so ridiculous to be running when all anyone should be doing is watching TV wearing pyjamas and eating nice things on a very rainy Sunday. At 6k, I thought the end of the route was close so picked up a bit of speed only to see the back of husband disappearing in the distance – I assumed it was just around the corner – literally – when it was a full 1k til the end of the run. My lace became undone and it was just too wet to keep up any kind of quick speed but I did my best and managed 7k, soaked through, with wet feet and an undone trainer – I’m not sure this was my finest running moment :S !! My legs are still a bit sore a couple of days after a run so maybe I’m not stretching enough – anyone else having this problem?
It’s only 6 weeks to go until the big day (10k day) so I’m keeping to my once a week schedule and then picking up my training to twice a week running in September. I’m also going to do one more full 10k before the actual race just to see if I can still run it…. Thank goodness the weather is turning back to dry 🙂
