Thousands hit Swansea seafront for annual 10k success

September 18, 2018 By Chris Williams

THOUSANDS of runners and spectators took to the streets of Swansea on Sunday for the Admiral Swansea Bay 10k.

Around 5,000 runners took centre stage for what is one of the top events of its kind in the UK, attracting fans and competitors from across the UK.

This year’s runners were issued with T-shirts bearing the motivational slogan: “All you need is the courage to believe in yourself and put one foot in front of the other.”

It is a quote from long-distance running legend Kathrine Switzer, famous for her running and social activism for women’s sport.

As well as the 10k, there were 1k, 3k and 5k junior fun runs, a 10k wheelchair race and a 100m mascot dash, won this year by Matt Clowes, who won £100 for their designated charity.

Cllr Robert Francis-Davies, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for innovation, regeneration and tourism, said: “It was a joy for our city to host so many running enthusiasts this weekend.

“The Admiral Swansea Bay 10k has a runner-friendly course with some of the finest views anywhere in the UK – it’s is a real celebration of Swansea’s sports culture.

“It’s a fantastic event for elite athletes, experienced runners and first timers, or anyone looking to raise money for charity or tackle personal fitness challenges.

“We’re delighted with the huge crowd of spectators which – yet again – added to the amazing community feel and great family atmosphere that helps to inspire everyone who takes part.”

The event has won silver for Best UK 10k for the past two years at The UK Running Awards. The junior races were also voted the UK’s Best Child-Friendly Event in last year’s awards.
